When one talks about wild Life Sanctuary immediately he is reminded of Ramnagar Wild Life Sanctuary (RWLS) which is 6 kms from Jammu, J&K State in India.  It is near Jammu and Neelgai and Barking Deer form the main WILDLIFE in this area.  The sanctuary covers an area of around 31.50 Sq.kms and temperature ranges between 24 to 39 degrees Centigrade during Summer and the winter has a temperature of say 2 to 20 degrees centigrade.  Many languages are spoken here which are Kashmir, Hindi, Pahari, Punjabi, Ladakhi and Urdu.   One can see mammals by making visits during September to March of a year and so also, one can view birds in plenty during March to May.  Many species say numbering around 15 and mammals numbering nearly 8 can be spotted at RWLS.

Various means to reach RWLS are through Air, Train and by Road.  One should reach Jammu by Air before taking taxis or other conveyance to reach RWLS, which is at a distance of 8 kms from the Airport.  From Station, RWLS is around 6 kms and is easily reachable.   Also, by Road, Buses or Luxury taxies can be engaged to reach RWLS.

Visitors can take care of their stay which is available in the Sanctuary itself, where rooms are available.  However, Meridian Palace is a hotel situated at the centre of the commercial area and has proximity to Railway Station as also to the Airport.  Also Hotel KC Residency is a comfortable stay place, which is situated in the Residency Road and this also has nearness to both Railway Station and Airport.  One should ensure to take their trekking shoes, raincoat and light cloth during Summer and Spring seasons.  For Photographers, RWLS is a feast indeed.

RWLS is spread over 31 kilometers of of the Himalayas, which is around 6 kms from Jammu. RWLS is an wonderful place, and one can naturally find many wild animals and birds. RWLS has many birds and mammal which may count to over 15 and 8 respectively.  Jeep safari is indeed very interesting and one can see many leopards, musk deer, brown bear etal, andmulti colored birds.   Also other spotted species are bulbul with white cheeks, Indian Mynahs, Rock Pigeon of blue color, and other birds.   The Sanctuary is around 8 kms from the Railways station and to enjoy the trip further, it is advisable to carry rain coats, light clothes, trekking shoes in summer and  to go for wild life searching,  sport heavy knitwear and waterproof windcheaters which would make trekking enjoyable.

By Air

The nearest Airport to RWLS is Jammu which is 8 Km from it. Visitors can hire private luxurycars to reach the wildlife reserve.

By Rail

One can reach reach RWLS by Rail route also.  The nearest railhead is at Jammu which is 6 Km away from it.

By Road

Buses and luxury taxis ply daily from Jammu to RWLS.

Ramnagar wildlife sanctuary is finds many of birds and mammal species.  If one is fortunate he can spot birds and animals of his choice.

The Animal Being

RWLS has 8 mammal types including nilgai and barking deer. The main types are - Nilgai and Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey, etc.

The Winged Beings

Nature has bestowed RWLS with many birds, the main one being - Peafowl, Blue Rock Pigeon, Mynah, Jungle Crow, Red Jungle Fowl, Golden Oriole, and White Cheeked Bulbul.

Safaris

Ramnagar Nagar National Park authorities also conduct safaris through JEEP and by venturing for such safaris, one can have the opportunity to see strange wild animals which are not spotted in the normal course. Why not- one can even be proud to have a look at Neelgai and Barking Deer like animals.  Passes are also available from Regional Wild life Warden, Jammu.

Stay inside the sanctuary are also possible, provided visitors make some prior bookings and can comfortably make a stay, however these accommodations appear to be limited in numbers.

Ensure to carry some important belongings like trekking shoes, raincoat and light cloth during both summer and spring, whereas in winter waterproof windcheaters and heavy woolens are recommended. Jeep safaris conducted by the Ramnagar National Park officials, will ensure visitors spotting Leopards, deer, musk, brown beer and also some Neelgai and Barking deer.  Passes or permits are issued by Regional Wild life warden in Jammu which is required to be secured while visiting.  Best time for a bird watch is March to May and so also for animal safari it is September to March.
