With the scenic beauty and amazing landscape well known Corbett Tiger Reserve is best defined as place known for the tiger roar, trumpet and the song enchanting all.
The recognition which Corbett Tiger Reserve has with it being chosen the inaugural Indian tiger project in the country as a perfect venue for that is a notable and it also distinguishes from the rest. Known is the excellent biodiversity of this reserve which has ample share of large number of habitats making it important and too much recognizable location. One witnesses Himalayan and peninsular flora and fauna in this reserve due to location of this reserve in Central Himalayan foothills.
Chaurs are the local terms used to define the grasslands here. Dhikala Chaur is the largest grassland area in this reserve. It was in 1974  that best of grasslands that also included prominent Buxar Chaur and Beri Chaur grasslands were made part of the Ramganga reservoir then. Several villages especially Dhara, Jhirna and Kothirau were relocated ted to expandits area. A habitat management process has been applied since 1994 to make best use of grasslands here.
Stretching over an area of approximately 82 sq. kilometers, present day Ramganga reservoir was founded in the year 1974. Its two parts include Corbett National Park and Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuaries accordingly. Countless varieties of fauna are available in the Corbett Tiger Reserve so is seen ample habitat diversities here. The richness is in terms of avifauna as well. According to the records maintained by the Zoological Survey of India there are more than 585 resident and migratory species available in this place.
History
It was in the year 1936 that this reserve area was developed to name as Hailey National Park then. It got renamed to Ramganga National Park in 1954-55 but finally it became Corbett National Park in 1955-56. Distinction it has is of being an oldest Indian national park. Likewise it was part of Tiger Project launch in 1973 as one out of the nine tiger reserves being found and selected for such purpose. In the expansion process additional 197.07 sq. kilometers area was added in its original 323.75 sq. kilometer to make its size bigger. Another expansion was in 1991 with 797.72 sq. kilometer area addition in the Corbett Tiger Reserve. Now the area covers entire Kalagarh Forest Division especially 301.18 sq. kilometer are of the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and Ramnagar Forest Division having 96.70 sq. kilometer area besides 89 sq. kilometers here. The Field Director of the Reserve has total administrative control over this whole area.
Weather And Best Time To Visit
There is moderate weather condition in this park that makes this protected area seething. Average wintertime temperature variance is from 5 °C (41 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) with foggy morning time. Highest summertime temperatures normally remains 40 °C (104 °F) and hardly cross that level. The area receives light rainfall in the dry season but it turns heavy once full monsoon arrives.
Best Time To Visit
Visitors of Corbett National Park are advised not to come anytime from June 16 to November 14 which is monsoon season and doesn’t suit a tour. By the time rainy season ends the park administration reopens it for visitors hence the best time is to arrive here anytime from January to mid-June months. This park witnesses the arrival of countless migratory birds during the wintertime that starts from December to February. The reservoir is remains packed by visitors in that period. If want to enjoy wildlife then come here in summer days and see tigers that come out of deep forests for water in the park.
Places To Visit
Dhikuli
Located at the borders of Corbett National Park, it is one of the famous destinations nearby Patli Dun valley and attracts the tourists. A century old rest house located here reminds of age old tradition. Impressive beauty is realized well especially when Kanda ridge forms the background, so do visitors from Dhikala enjoy its landscape and naturalness due to valley’s presence.
Treks
No tourist can walk inside this park as it is not allowed inside but they can definitely trek anywhere if accompany a guide for that purpose. As wintertime is the chilling one due to too much coldness the visitors are advised to arrange for winter cloths while visiting during that period.
Kalagarh Dam
Located in the southwestern direction of Jim Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary this dam offers unique look. Those arriving here to watch birds can make best use of this place as they witness several migratory waterfowls that arrive in the wintertime.
How To Reach
Ramnagar town serves as Corbett Tiger Reserve headquarters. Several overnight trains run for Ramnagar originating from capital Delhi besides many trains running from Varanasi or Lucknow. Once arrived at Ramnagar then approach a taxi for hiring to reach Dhikala and park.
The roadways connects Ramnagar with prominent Indian cities Lucknow, Nainital, Ranikhet, Haridwar, Dehradun and New Delhi amongst others. If preferign the Gajraula—Moradabad—Kashipur route to reach Ramnagar from Delhi then you drive for 295 kilometers to reach there. There is direct railways service from Ramnagar to New Delhi. Other options are reaching Haldwani/Kashipur/Kathgodam through train and taking roadways to reach Ramnagar thereafter.
Flora And Fauna
Flora
This park possesses total of 488 species of plants from various categories. Sai forestry area besides Anogeissus-Acacia catechu forests are the areas where there is high tree density in the reserve. That is why maximum tree basal cover remains high there as compared to the rest parts. One see effective regeneration of Mallotus philippensis, Jamun and Diospyros tomentosa there so are common their sapling and seedling layers in the area unlike rest areas where such cases are rare.
Fauna
Both resident and migratory birds species of more than 585 types are seen here. Some of the major ones include crested serpent eagles, blossom-headed parakeet and red jungle fowl amongst others that make good collection. The reptile species are of 33 types while seven amphibians and fish species each besides 37 dragonfly species make wider collection.
Considered best habitat for tigers due to presence of thick jungles, Ramganga River and too much prey this reserve remains in the limelight. Availability of multiple prey animals make it true homes of tigers. Early cases have shown that usually tigers of this park had often killed good number of animals including buffalos and elephants for the food purpose. Too much concealment in this reserve makes it not suitable for the Bengal tigers to stay hence they aren’t seen so easily. In case there is food shortage then tigers attack on the other animals in special cases. Cases of tigers having attacked domestic animals due to shortage of preys too were reported.
Although hilly areas are the best destinations of leopards but they are also spotted in the lowlands especially forestry regions. Few small felines making this park a their home are jungle cats, fishing cat and leopard cats amongst others. Some more mammals present here are barking, sambar, hog and chital deer besides the Sloth and Himalayan Black bears as well as Indian Grey Mongoose. Good number of otters, yellow-throated martens, ghoral or goat-antelopes, and Indian pangolins besides langur and rhesus monkeys make good collection. Presence of owls and nightjars is also witnessed in the nighttime.
Herds of elephants moving in hundreds of numbers are common in summertime. This reserve also has the dangerous species Indian python that can easily kill the chital deer as well. Several captive breeding programs have been initiated recently to save the local crocodiles from extinction. These crocodiles are available in the Ramganga River and is preserved.
Wildlife
Presence of more than 585 bird species, 7 amphibian species, 33 reptile species and 7 fish species, the Corbett reserve has good collection including 37 dragonfly species available there.
Presence of endangered Bengal tigers are the key highlight of Jim Corbett Park but rest wildlife animals especially leopards and crocodiles are common here. Some more collection of animals are from sambas, hogs, otters, boars, elephants, sloths, gorals, pangolins and langurs amongst others that make good variety.
Spotting the black bucks, various types of deer, Himalayan Black bears, yellow-throated martens and Indian grey mongoose has literally enhanced the beauty of this national park whose collection keeps increasing. Variegated climatic condition of Corbett national park makes it preferred destination of many local and migratory birds including peacocks, eagles, jungle fowls and parakeets etc.
Tigers
Most famous amongst all wild animals, tigers are major attractions here. In fact symbolic importance of tigers due to their power and being worshiped by rest  animals they remain key animals in the forest so is it seen here. Their territories have been marked in various locations for additional ease nearby trees, bushes and rocks. The tree trunks have common claw marks which can be witnessed there.
Elephants
Approximately 700 elephants inhabit throughout the Corbett national park area. Herds of hundreds of such elephants are commonly seen in summertime when they move around inside the forest.
Extraordinary intelligence and sharp memory elephants distinguish them. Such is the case due to the large sized brains of elephants which rest animals don’t have. Usually male elephants are recognized through their highly multipurpose organ of the long tusks. As elephants are part of the herbivorous animal groups they commonly survive on the grasses, leaves, tree stems, vines, bamboos and various types of shrubs having been arranged for them.
Other Mammals
Some more mammals are mainly leopard and large cats which are commonly found in this national park. Such animals are of different categories and are often compared with tigers but not like that. Such animals are flexible and handy as well and feels the terrains at home. Hilly areas too have their presence though they are also commonly spotted in land and forest areas. They jump down from the trees to catch the pray.
Likewise, langurs or hanumans as they are commonly denoted with, are dark faced, light bodied with longer tails make key attraction. Hindus worship this animal that is available in the forest in various locations. It is vegetarian animal so eats leaves, flowers, buds, fruit and seeds amongst others.
Timings
The park normally opens from 6:00 am to 11:00 am in the morning and again in the afternoon from 2:30 pm till 5:30 pm in the evening.
Where To Stay
The outer sidelines of Corbett National Park has a camps that has thick forestry surrounding in the one portion and Kosi river borders it from other side.
There are several deluxe cottages and rooms inside this tiger camp that makes a stay truly comfortable. Availability of many excellent rooms and cottages make it a great place to stay especially because of the air-conditioned system making them completely luxurious. Facilities are cottage rooms equipped with either double beds and all types of amenities especially furniture sets to make the stay comfortable. Western styled bathroom and toilet facilities offer excellent showering system.
Famous Gol Ghar dining hall here has the facility of different types of dishes from Indian to Continental or Chinese cuisine which makes good food choice to make. There is proper power back-up system with generator kept there as stand-by solution in case of power failure. Few recreational activities are also arranged like facility for folk music or various such performance reminding local culture.
Team of naturalists and drivers available here are trained to guide visitors in many ways from walks to visits in forests especially if people look for tiger-tracking etc. Various types of presentations are given for evening sliding besides making it easy to understand the flora and fauna better.
General Information
Do know the below details prior to visiting this park
  • Follow the rules, for e.g., do not walk around if you are not permitted to do so
  • Wear clothes in shades of brown and green as they are less disturbing to the environment
  • Avoid wearing perfumes and do not smoke in restricted areas.
  • Animals are extremely wary of the human voice. Don’t make noise, don’t play music and please don’t honk car horn.
  • Carry Personal medication and insect repellent
  • Carry Binoculars, Cameras, film rolls and  Flashlight along with books and other reading material
  • Don’t leave behind any litter and plastic bags are big hazards for animals
  • Comfortable walking shoes are appropriate than the fashionable ones 
  • For winter travel heavy woolens are a must especially for open jeep safaris. Cottons are apt for summer months
  • Rain Gear is essential for the monsoons and
  • Find about the habits of the animal you want to see to avoid disappointment.
