Champawat is a town as well as a Nagar Panchayat in the district of Champawat in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is considered as the administrative headquarters of district of Champawat.

Mythology

People believe Champwat to be a place where the Kurmavtar of Lord Vishnu i.e. the turtle incarnation had been done.

History

Champawat was initially the Chand Dynasty capital where rulers of Chand dynasty ruled for years.There is a temple of Baleshwar being constructed by the rulers of Chand dynasty in the 16th century. It is a marvelous monument having beautiful marvel stones carved architecture.

At present, the king of former state of Kumaon has been the ruler here i.e. Raja Mahendra Chand belonging to Lamakhet, who got married to Rani Gita Chand belonging to Rina and the couple has three kids, Rajkumari Aakanksha Chand, Rajkumar Aryan Chand and Rajkumari Mallika Chand.It is believed that Champawat has been home to the tigers of Champawat.

According to the 2001 census of India, Champawat consists of a dense population having males constituting 57% of the total population while females contributing to 43% of the total population.The mean literacy rate of Champawat is about 73%, which is much higher than thenational literacy rate on an average i.e. 59.5%. the male literacy rate here is 78% while there are 67% female literates found in Champawat. There are kids below age of 6 years constituting 14% of the total population.
