Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is reserve that lies in Assam in the Marigaon district. The reserve lies at a distance of 30 km from Guwahati. By road the distance is about 48 km. the drive to the reserve takes one hour and on the way one passes the beautiful Brahmaputra River. The entire scenery on the way to the reserve is gorgeous. The reserve is known for its one horned Indian Rhinoceros. The entire wildlife sanctuary is sprawled over at an area of 39 sq kms. The rhinoceros come under 16 km of the park’s area. In the year 1971 Pobitora was declared a reserve forest while in the year 1987 it was declared a wildlife sanctuary.
History: in the year 1971 this wild life park was declared as a reserve forest so that wildlife could be protected on a larger scale. The population of the India Rhinoceros was falling down and hence needed some sought of protection. This is when it was declared as a wildlife sanctuary so that a stop could be put on poaching. The area of the sanctuary was ruled by 6 different rulers in the medieval years and then by the British. It was the large population of the Indian Rhinoceros that made this wildlife sanctuary so famous
Weather and Best Time to Visit:
the weather here in Assam is subtropical. Thus it tends to get very humid. The state gets plenty of rainfall all year round. The weather remains very pleasant here. The highest temperature in the summer months is 30 C while in winter it is around 10 C. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from the month of October up to March.
How to Reach
By Air: Guwahati is the closest airport to the sanctuary.
By Rail: the city of Guwahati is well connected to most cities nearby through the rail services. Hence reaching the park is very simple. One could hire buses and taxis to get to the sanctuary.
By Road: Guwahati is easily accessible from any road in Assam. One can reach the park by any mode of transport from Guwahati.

Wildlife
Flora: diverse vegetation is found here in the sanctuary since the park is situated at such a high altitude. The hills in the area are responsible for such a vast and mixed type of vegetation. The sanctuary has a great number of coconut trees growing in it.
Fauna: the Great Indian Rhinoceros is what the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for. The sanctuary has about 80 of these Rhinoceros. The park is home to other animals as well. Like the Asiatic Lion, the leopard, species of monkeys. The park has about 200 species of birds some are migratory birds also.
Major Wildlife Attractions
Mammals: the sanctuary is famous for its one horned Indian Rhinoceros. Other animals that are seen here in the park are the Asiatic
Indian One Horned Rhino, Leopard, Jackal, Wild Boar, Chinese Pangolin, Smooth Indian Otter, Large Indian Civet Cat, Small Indian Civet Cat, etc.
Birds: the wildlife sanctuary has nearly 200 different species of birds. Some of them that are commonly spotted at the park are the white necked stork, the pelican and the teal.
Safaris: in order to have a successful trip to the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary one needs to plan prior to the trip. One can take an elephant safari or a jeep safari to view the entire sanctuary. A jeep safari will cover the entire area of the sanctuary but will not be able to take you in the depth of the forest. While the elephant safari on the other hand will make sure that you are in close proximity with the animals in the park. The areas where the Rhinoceros have their habitat are not accessible by a jeep, hence one need to take an elephant safari in order to see them in their natural habitat.
Tariff
Elephant Rides: Rs. 350 per head. 4 people can ride at a time.
Jeep Rides: Rs. 1050 for one hour jeep ride.
Where to stay
The Kunki resort is a great place to stay. It is near the sanctuary. The resort is owned by the government. It is a comfortable and a nice place to stay in.

The Assam tourism department also has a tourist lodge in the Mayang village. It lies about 9 km away from the sanctuary. Inspection bungalows are also available to stay. They are run by the forest department.

General Information
  • Visiting the sanctuary during the monsoon is a strict no.
  • Make sure that you reserve the elephant and the jeep safari as soon as you can, because there tends to be a lot of rush in the peak season. Hence book your seats in advance.
  • Make sure you use adequate amounts of sun block when out in the park during the day. The sun can be very strong. Wear a hat and sunglasses. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
