History

Dandeli consists of many migrants mostly from North India including UP, Rajasthan, including parts of Karnataka as well. Though the most spoken language here is Kannada, yet Hindi, Marathi is also spoken here. This place consists of diverse culture and festivals like Ramleela, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi are all celebrated here.

The sanctuary here is filled with variety of wildlife and has a priceless collection of wildlife and nature. Dandeli is the best place to visit for those who love nature and it is becoming more and more favourite tourist spot everyday. There are two main hydroelectric power-stations Nagjhari Power Station and Supa Power Station which are both under the Karnatak government.

The Kali river from which the power plants gain their energy is the main source of life of the people in that region. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary located in Dandeli consists of steep slopes, hilly terrain and river valleys that are deep. Dandeli consists of moist deciduous and evergreen forests. Animals like leopards, mouse deer, elephants, gaur, magpir robin, crested serpent-eagle etc. are the kinds of wildlife and birds that are found here.

By Air

The closest airports from Dandeli are Belgaum, Hubli and Goa at a distance of 110, 75 and 150 kms respectively and there is a daily flight of Air Deccan from Mumbai, Banglore to these three places.

By Train

The closest train stations are Alnavar, Londa, Dharwad andHubli at a distance of 32, 48, 57 and 75 kms apart.

By Road

Places like Goa, Hubli, Karwar, Mumbai,Dharwad and Banglore are well connected to Dandeli. There is ample of bus service from this place and facilities like picking and dropping from close destination can be   possible on request.

Places To Visit

Kulgi Nature Camp It has a museum and a center to interpret nature 14kms away from Dandeli.

Weather And Best Time To Visit

October to June is the best time to visit. Avoid the monsoon as the rains become rather heavy in these parts.

Dandeli has moderate climate all through the year.

Language And Culture

The languages most spoken are Kannada and Hindi. These are the official language.

There are many resorts, guest houses, tents, lodges, etc. to stay here. All of these places are provided with regular and important amenities. Hornbill River Resort, Old Magazine House, Pansoli Guest House, Kali River Resort, etc. are few places where people can stay.

Festivals And Activities

White Water Rafting

For adventure sports like water rafting, Dandeli is the best as it has a 9km long run lasting for 4hours or a run of just the half size for both experts and amateurs.

Trekking

Due to the vast extent of the sanctuary trekking becomes more fun and the forest department permits trekking.

Bird Watching

There are large numbers of birds coming to Dandeli and is an ideal place for bird watching, where the government provides with all the facilities of bird watching and the tourists do not need to have a vehicle of their own.

Kayaking

Supa reservoir, a man-made reservoir covers a huge area and is the place where the Kayaking activities take place.
