The Fort of Jaigarh is located on the Cheel ka Teela (meaning Hill of Eagles) in the Aravalli hill rangesfrom where the Maota Lake and the Amber Fort can be overlooked in Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The Fort along with the palace complex have been named after Jai Singh II who buit this fort.
The fort has a very similar type of structure as to that of the Amber Fort, and is popularly called as the Victory Fort. It comprises of 3 km length across the north-south direction while it is 1 km broad. The fort has cannon whose name is “Jaivana”, and got created in the precincts of the fort and was at that time the largest cannon of the world on wheels. The complex of the palace has Laxmi Vilas, Vilas Mandir, Lalit Mandir and Aram Mandir found in the fort itself having well- maintained gardens where the royal family used to live, the Shubhat Niwas which is the assembly hall of the soldiers. There is a museum as well as an armoury. The forts of Jaigarh and the Amber Fort have connections through subterranean passages and are regarded as just one complex.
History
Historically, the fort of Jaigarh dates back to 1726, when it got constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh, for serving as a defense ring for Amber & Jaipur cities. It is one of the causes for the fort has been least maintained and artistic unlike the other palaces and forts of Jaipur.
It is regarded as an entire citadel, and also was at times the hub of production of artillery for the royal people especially Rajputs. Apart from this it was also serving the purpose of treasury for the popular Kacchawahas.
Architecture
The literal meaning of Jaigarh is `Victory Fort' and was constructed between the 15th-18th century, and lies 15 km away from Jaipur, among the strewn rocks, stone ramparts and hills covered with thorn-scrub ,its forbidding stone ramparts which can be viewed from Jaipur city. There is a steep road going towards the major gate, i.e. the Dungar Darwaza, having a beautiful view.
Start with the biggest draw of Jaigarh- the Jaivana, which is regarded as the world's greatest unique cannon on wheels. The Jaivana got constructed in the foundry of Jaigarh in the year 1720, and only the barrel has a weight of around 50 tons. As per the belief of people, Jaivana had been fired just once. The inspections of cannon have proved that it has been fired many a times.
One can wander around and see the ramparts peering down the flaws of boiling oil and guns or even the broad channels of water can be viewed. These had been a part of an efficient system meant for harvesting the rainwater, taking water in from all along the hills and then taking it to the underground tanks of Jaigarh. The biggest of the tanks had the capacity of storing 60,00,000 gallons of water.
The armoury chamber was having a great display of shields, swords, guns, 50 kg cannon ball and muskets. There are pictures of ancient photographs of maharajas of Jaipur such as, Major Genral Man Singh II and Sawai Bhawani Singh who gave their service to the Indian Army or senior officers.
The museum lies to the left of Awami Gate and displays photographs of the Jaipur's Royalty, artefacts and stamps including a circular package of cards.
