Among the popular 96 National Parks of India,Pakhui -NameriNational Park, which is situated in Sonitpur district of Assam, was established in the year 1978, adjascent to Pakui Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh, while the river Jia-Bhoroli and its tributaries called Diji, Doigurung, Dinai, Nameri, Kareitc and Dikoraicriss cross this region, making the location fertile and rich with greeneries, at the same time risky and dangerous during rainy season, giving natural protection for this Tiger sanctuary which is in fact flooded with wild elephants of 225 to 240 in number, giving constant threat to human inhabitation at all times.
Pakhui -Nameri is a special kind of National Park in the sense,  wild life here has very large amount of prey for their living, in the form of Sambar, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Gauri and Wild Boar, while as many as 3000 domestic cattle contribute to the prey of this wildlife at the chagrin of nearby village livelihood and the Tigers and Leopards of the forest conceal their glee after every meal they have from the tasty domestic animal resource.
Nameri being a protected forest area and reserved for Tigers is more known for its Elephant inhabitants, while Nameri and SonaiRupai are the two Protected Areas of forest region in the Northern Bank of Brahmaputra River in the districts of Sonitpur, Dhemaji and Lakhipur in Assam State.
History
In Ancient India, Ahom and Koch kingdoms ruled the region where Nameri National Park is situated, while it was named a Reserve Forest in 1978 with up gradation to a Wild Life Sanctuary in the year 1985 covering 137 sq.km. area forming part of Naduar Forest Reserve, while in the year 1998 an addition of 75 sq.km. area was added to this park when it was declared as a National Park.
The wildlife population in thisPakhui -Nameri National Park which include 240 or so Elephants and about 30 Tigers, apart from river-rafting and angling adventures in the River Jia attract large number of tourists to this region.
Weather And Best Time To Visit
This National Park location enjoys normal tropical climate, inviting tourists throughout the year, because the temperature never goes above 35 degree Celsius and below 10 degree Celsius anytime in the year, while even in the monsoon times visitors enjoy a pleasant climate while the approximate humidity lies around 40%.
Travel advisers consider December and January as the best months to visit, while the Park is open for visits from the month of November extending up to April every year, keeping of the monsoon period while heavy rainfall days might discomfort the visitors.
Places To Visit
There are quite a few tourist attractions in this Pakhui -Nameri National Park location apart from the Wild Life appearances, which include
  • Angling adventure at Nameri river and its tributaries, which are fast flowing and deep, while fishing  in these river is also an interesting pastime with 3 to 9 feet long Golden Masheer fish is famous in this water front , which is known as ‘Tiger of Himalayan rivers’.
  • Nameri River Rafting is another adventure sport possible in the south eastern section of the river Jai Bharali, enabling one to raft up to 13 km distance and 3 hours duration.
  • Wild life trekking at Nameri is another adventurous experience for the tourists, for which forest department gives lot of help and assistance.
  • Although there are no good roads, visiting these spots and enjoying the adventure is quite safe and comfortable.
  • Nameri rafting is facilitated by Nameri Eco camp and also by JiaBhorali Resort, providing their own boatsat affordable rates.

How To Reach

Reaching Pakhui -Nameri National Park is possible by Air, Rail or Road, while the nearest Airport is at Salonibari in Tezpur situated 34 km nearer to the Park, the nearest Rail Station is located at Tezpur although the bigger railhead is at Guwahati which is 220 km away, from both these places and also from various important cities of India, public transport by road is available in Plenty, being closer to National Highways NH37 and NH52.
Flora And Fauna
Flora
Nameri maintains a semi-evergreen vegetation, with moist deciduous forests rich with cane and bamboo plants sporting narrow strips of open greenfields along the rivers, the forest enriched with epiphytes, creepers, lianas and bamboo, the forest having around 600 types of plants and trees, some known species being Micheliachampaca, Gmelinearborea, Chukrasiatabularis, Amari, Uriumpoma, Ajar, Agaru, BhelouBonjolokia, Rudhraksha, Terminaliamyriocarpa, Hatipoliaakhakan, Mesuaferrca and the like, while orchids such as Dendrobium, Cypripedium reginae and Cymbidium are also raised here.
Fauna
This is basically a tiger reserve, but surprisingly it is more an Elephant country, ideal location for the habitation by a number of other animals including Leopard, Dhole, Sambar, Muntjac, Pygmy Hog, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, Capped Langur, Himalayan Black Bear apart from Indian Giant Squirrel, at the same time there are about 300 varieties of birds fly over here, rest and live for months together, which include Great Pied Hornbill, White winged wood duck, Rufous Necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Ibis Bill, Black Stork, Babblers, Bee-eaters, Plovers and many other bird species.
Wildlife
The diversity of animal species is a specialty of Pakhui -Nameri National Park, while some of the rare mammal varieties of animal are found in the Park, which include Tigers, Leopards, Cat Leopard, Clouded Leopards, Asian Elephants, Jungle Cats, Gaurs, Rhesus Macaque types, Capped Langur varieties, Barking Deer, Sambar type mammals, Himalayan Black Bear, Civet Cat, Wild Dog, Indian Fox, Chinese Pangolin, etc. The fish specie known as the tiger of Indian rivers, Golden Mahseeris one which is available only in the river JiaBhoroli, while there are different types of Snakes, Monitor Lizards, Turtles and other water born species, which would excite any visitor with their presence.
Diversity of Bird species is another special feature of Pakhui -Nameri National Park, while some of the most endangered species closer to extinction are found here, for instance, the varieties of Little Cormorant, Pond Heron, Little Egret, Large Cormorant, Pariah Kit3e, Cotton Teal, Redwattled Lapwing Magpie Robin, Red Jungle Fowl, Green Pigeon, Green Imperial Pigeon, Minivet, Whitewinged Duck, Horned Owl, Black headed Oriole, Hill Myna, Indian Roller, Kingfisher varieties, Hornbill varieties, Barbets, Drongo varieties, Woodpeckers, Bulbuls, Owls, Tailorbirds, Srikes, Doves, Crow Pheasants, Indian Cuckoo varieties and many other species do live here.
The diversity in the Ecological wealth is also notable in Pakhui -NameriNational Park, where the visitor can see different varieties of trees, plants, creepers and herbal sprouts, giving a semi evergreen look throughout the year.
Timings
The timings for visiting the Pakhui -NameriNational Park has not been found specifically, although the forest department officials or chowkidar will guide the visitor about the timings suitable for visiting the Park.

General Information
When one visits Pakhui -NameriNational Park, it is important to
  • Take necessary accessories to protect against mosquitoes and other insects
  • To carry a flashlight with fully charged batteries
  • Remember to take escort while moving in the open space from where one stays, as Elephants may come and attack anytime in the open areas
  • Always move around with a guide who knows about the movement of elephants in the zone
  • Remember the ethnic related practices and culture as one’s behaviour in one region may mean offence to one in this region
  • Have the ID card in hand always
  • Take some rest at Guwahati as travel from Guwahati to Nameri will take a long time
