History

Shivpuri is a historic town situated in the northernMadhya Pradesh. Miscellany of Magnificent palaces, royal streets, ancient mansions and hunting lodges offer a majestic feel to all tourists. Shivpuri is an ancient, sacred town. The former name of Shivpuri is Sipra. It was named Shivpuri in Lord Shiva’s honour after independence. It has a royal inheritance which  comes from Gwalior’s Scindia Rulers. If you dig a little deeper then you will find that mughal kings used its dense forests for their royal hobby of hunting.elephants were captured an large numbers by the mughal King Akbar  durig his return From mandu in 1564. In the 17th century Narwar’s Kachwhas were awarded Shivpuri in the form of Jagir. After receiving directions fromGwalior’s chief Jankoji Shinde Ranoji Bhoite won the Shivpuri fort and the kingdom. In 1781 the British won the battle against the Scindias. Subsequent to this Mutual-defence Treaty was signed. Tantya Tope was Hanged till death by the british on 17 april 1859 in shivpuri because he participated in the 1857 revolt.
