Kataraniaghat Wild Life Sanctuary is not popular yet, however, this Wildlife park situated in the Nepal Border, located at the Tarai region comes under the Dudhawa Tiger Reserve,  the park having been established as early as 1976, is composed of six divisions, four of them known as Katarnia, Murthia, Nishangara and Dharmpur lying in the core area, remaining two located in the buffer area of the Sanctuary, where Tharu tribes live, while Katarniaghat spreads across Bardila National Park bord in Nepal, in which part the famous rivers Girwa and Kodila joining to enrich the Ghaghra part of the Sanctuary.
Hunting and bird shooting are prohibited in this area as per the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 accomplished by the U.P.Wildlife Protection Rules of 1974.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
This region being one enjoying sub tropical climate, summers from April to October, temperature ranging with 32 degree Celsius to 46 degree Celsius, while Winters from November to March with 5 degree Celsius to 15 degrees, with cold waves from Himalayan region always keeping the area cool, the best recommended time to visit this Sanctuary is from November to June, every year.  The fog formation during winters will be an exciting experience for those who choose to visit the Sanctuary during winter period.
How to Reach
A traveller can reach this place from Lucknow by road, passing through Bahraich  in Bichhia route, while the nearest Railway Station is in Bichhia in Gonda-Bahraich Railway line and for those who come from the other parts of the country, the nearest Airport is Lucknow’s Amausi Airport which is 210 km away from this Sanctuary site.

Wildlife
Some of the most endangered species are found in this forestry, which include varieties of gharial, rhino, tiger, Gangetic dolphin, Hispid Hare, Swamp Deer, Bengal Florican, Long Billed vultures and White Backed vultures, mainly because of the comfortable eco system enriched by Teak and Sal trees in this Terai region.
Katerniaghat’s herpetofauna is another beautiful feature to enjoy, which is composed of various rare reptile species such as Burmese Rock Python, Banded Krait, Paradise flying Snake, the Yellow Speckled Wolf Snake, besides which there are many other species still under discovery, as some newer varieties like Red Coral Kukri Snake attracted the attention of researchers here in the park.

General Information
Visitors are required to observe certain etiquettes and decorum in the park, which include
  • Refraining from smoking inside the park area
  • Not disturbing the animals which are taking a nap during day times as they are busy with activities during night times.
  • Not irritating or teasing the animals in any manner
  • Taking the assistance of the Official guides while touring the park
  • Avoiding use of flash lights and such photography which would hurt the animals
  • Not picking up plants or insects from the park as collection items
  • Carrying plenty of water for personal use.
