TheDatia castle is a well built fort with magnificent architecture. The architectural designsinclude the layout of Mughal and Rajput Empire. That is the fort consists of both the royal Mughal as well as the Rajputana grace.
The fort was constructed by Bir Singh Dev, The Chief Officer of Bundela in the year 1620. The fort is built upon a rock, one reason for which it appears to be taller than its actual height. It is a five storeyed 130 Ft tall building. The Lord hasting, British Governor General stayed in the fort in the year 1818 and an event to welcome Lord Curzon, the viceroy was held in the year 1902.
To view the forts immense beauty is like a dream come true experience.
The fort is located almost in the midway of Chennai and Mumbai track and hence accessible from both the areas by train and even bus. But if coming via air transport the most closest airport is that situated in Gwalior.
Architecture
The castle is divided into four regions each of which possess a Mandap in the middle. The best and most astonishing feature of this palace is that it is made completely with the help of stones and wood and not even a single bit of iron is used in its construction. The best region of the castle is its eastern part well carved with stones. The rest 3 regions are worth admiring too. The central tomb inherits the Lord Ganesha's idol and Goddess Durga guards both the entrance of the temple. In front of the first entrance of the temple there resides a the main house diety of Bundelawhere as at the other entrance there is a Dargha. The castle is a bitworn out by the cyclone that hit the state in the year 1985, but still holds got for the people interested in archeology as well as architecture.
How to Reach
One can easily visit the fort via any of the two route either from Jhansi,Uttar Pradesh or from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Datia is one of the place located on the Delhi-Mumbai track.
One of the most renowned trains from Gwalior and Jhansi is BundelkhandExpress and the return train is Chhatisgarh Express.
Nearby Places to Visit
The fort holds a huge courtyard at its central region with a five storey tower accommodating 440 families in it at a time. The ceiling of the dancing room is carved with the fabulous scriptures, these beautiful pieces of art are also found on the Balconies. One of the best and the unique feature of the fort is that the lower two storey’s of the tower are underground.
The fort is an exemplary example of Indoislamic designing. May it be the beautifully depicted love stories of the very famous people like Mukesh and Usha or the time varied description of the countries development. The onion dooms, interlocked walkways and the pillared pavilion is worth a watch.
The place is also famous for it's Mukarba, the group of cenotaphs. Which are almost twenty in number.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the fort is generally in winter as the winters temperature is not that extreme but pleasing enough. The fort experiences heavy rainfall and hot summer days hence not a preferable time to visit.
Bastar-Dussera, a festival that comes in the month of September - October is a colorful cultural fest that lasts for nine days.
So in short the best time to visit is in the month of October to March. Favourble climate and loads of amazing events.
