Nainital is a well known hill station in Uttarakhand State in India. It is located at a height of 2,084 m above the sea level. The Nainital is found in such a way that there is a pear-shaped lake, it has mountains at its surroundings and the circumference is about 2 miles. One can avail a number of magnificent views of the high peaks and there is an amazing snowy range of the Himalayas.

The slopes of Nainital are densely populated having an elevation which ranges from 1940 m-2100 meters. The highest point nearby is Naina Peak or China Peak, with an elevation of 2619 mts.

As per the climatic conditions of Nainital, there are temperate summers, having a highest temperature of 27 °C and lowest of 7 °C, the times when its population rises to above five times having several tourists especially from the northern plains of the country. During winterseason, Nainital gets snowfall from December to February having temperatures which ranges from 15 °C to a lowest of −3°C.

Taking into account the 2001 census of India, the male population of Nainital is 54% of total population while females constitute 46%. The average literacy rate of Nainital is 91%, which is much more than national rate of 59.5%. The literacy rate of males is 98% while that of females is 86%. There are kids of below 6 years of age in Nainital which contribute 1% of the total population.

Nainital is quite successful in catching the fancy of several tourists every year.There is a famous Naina Devi Temple, from where Nainital got its name. Tourism is the major and crucial segment of the economy of Nainital. The famous places among the tourists of Nainital are as follows:
Nainital Lake- Also called as Naini Lake, it is located in the city’s heart. Nainital also earned its name from this lake. This eye-shaped lake is a famous tourist spot and works like a magnet for the tourists visiting here. People come here for a leisurely stroll and they also enjoy by boating here to take a look of this picturesque place. There is Mallital towards the northern direction of the lake, while towards the southern end there is Tallital.

Naini Devi Temple

This temple is situated on the Naini lake’s northern shores. Maa Naina Devi is the presiding deity of this temple which represents two eyes or Netras. Naina Devi is the deity of Mata Kali as well as Lord Ganesha. People believe that Nainital is one among 64 Shaktipeeths, where Goddess Sati’s body part fell, while Lord Shiva was carrying her body.

St. John in the Wilderness

It is a church which was incorporated in 1844 and is found at the northern end of the town, Mallital. The church got its name from Daniel Wilson, who was the Bishop of Calcutta but came to Nainital because of some ailments.

Governor’s House- also called as Raj Bhavan and was initially called by the name Government House came into existence in 1899 by the architect F.W. Stevens.

Snow View

It is located at a height of 2,270 m and is found atop Sher-ka-danda Ridge. People usually reach there with the help of cable cars which costs around Rs.150 per person. These charges are for one hour stay there. The timings for having a beautiful snow view is 10.00a.m.- 5.00p.m. one can get to see the spectacular views of the Himalayas on a clear day, it includes views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Trisul. Best time for sight- seeing is late October-November.

China Peak

It is also known by the name Naina Peak or Cheena Peak and is the tallest peak of the town, having an altitude 2,615 m. It lies at a walking distance of 6 km from Mallital.
