Whole area is a rolling of high and medium hills coming under this protected area that maintains two directions from northern to southern side. In fact high rash and inaccessibility of hills create a mystery too. Deep valleys are there in lower side of the region while the rest areas are very much plain land surrounded by Keisalam, Seling and Aivapui river tribunals that mix with the Khawthlagtuipui river.
Many smaller recurrent rivulets are witnessed in and around this reserve sans the upper areas that have many water holes. Those areas also have salt licks which have been designed at multiple spots so that wild animals can remain in comfort. Leaf Monkeys are abundantly found in this reserve which is mainly maintained as a bio-diversity hotspot housing large number of floras and faunas representing Indo-Malayan collection.
History
Dampha came under the possession of present parties since 1950 as it was under someone else’s control before that. Whole area especially lower portion was meant for Jhum of shifting previously. Tiny villages were established in this region in early 1960s once cultivation increased in lower areas. Unfortunately such intrigue proved wrong and harmful impact was observed when area’s biodiversity got disturbed. Finally the area was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1974 by keeping in view conserving area’s faster endangering natural treasure. This Sanctuary was re-notified in 1985 due to certain lapses in procedures. It finally became a Tiger Reserve in 1994 through a new declaration.
District Council had already declared its riverine area in the eastern and western side nearby Khawthland tuipui or Sazalui a Reserved Forest in 1952. This area towards the Tui-lianpui River in west and east’s Teirei River became prominent.

Although there is pleasant and normally warm climatic condition for the whole year but wintertime starting from November to December observes chilling coldness.

Arrive here anytime from October to March which is best time for a visit here.
Places To Visit
As the whole area is remote and communication problem is a common scene here this reserve doesn’t have ample number of visitors. With fast progress in communication and infrastructure through railways and to be established Lengpui Airport at a distance of approximately 70 kilometers from this reserve there is expectation for additional tourist attraction.
How To Reach
By Road
Several private and DUPSRTC buses run and have good link from the rest cities to link it with them.
Important road distances are Lucknow - 238 km, Bareilly - 260 km, Delhi - 430 km, Palia - 5 km.
By Air
Nearest domestic airport links this place with other cities of the country by the regular flight services available.
By Rail
Dudhwa is the nearest railway station at a distance of 4 kilometers. Other stations are Palia at 10 kilometers and Mailani at 37 kilometers and Dudhwa railway station is part of the meter gauge of northeastern railways that links various other locations.
By Local Transport
Several coaches and jeeps are available for hiring and may be used to reach up to national park’s administrative office located at Dudhwa so that reaching up to this part becomes easy.
Flora And Fauna
Flora
There is ample mixture of multiple species in this reserve. They are indeed rarest of the collections and make excellent variety in the region. It needs thorough observation to assess them and their qualitative features that make best variety in the reserve. Excellent choice is also from variety of bamboo canes besides good number of orchid species as well.
Fauna
Several types of sporadic animals are available in this tiger reserve. They are in large scale and make ample choice. Some of the major faunas usually seen in the sanctuary are as follows:-
Arboreal
They include the rhesus macaque besides typical kind of monkeys and animals originating from Assam abundant varieties of other animals that make best choice for the animal lovers.
Ground Animal
Multiple types of tigers and leopard especially those having their roots from India and barking deer make large collection besides several types of wild boars and those common in the Himalayan region.
Avi Fauna
The famous Indian hornbill or vapual besides pied hornbill from the Malabar, also denoted with vahai and variety of peacocks especially those famous as red jungle fowls make wonderful choices here.
Reptile
There is good choice of species from the python with large varieties of them and collection of hill tortoise make it a larger collection indeed. There are countless species here that makes the prominent flora species collection. It is notable that their collection is a mixture of several rare species which can be studied thoroughly for their better understanding and especially to know the scientific factors.
Where To Stay
Different centers of forest department offers ample facility for accommodation in the park itself. Some other options are rest houses in the forest, various Swiss Cottage Tents besides Tharu Huts in and around Dudhwa, Sathiana, Bankatti, Sonaripur and Kila that make good option.

General Information
- Post and Telegraph offices are located at Palia which is nearby from where STD/ISD facilities are availed. There is no internet facility in and around this reserve area.
- Maintain nature of sanctum sanctorum by treating the Sanctuary respectfully.
- As wild animals keep crossing the way inside the Sanctuary do mind it while you are in a vehicle.
- There is prohibition to carry transistors, tape recorders or continuing loud conversations inside Sanctuary premises.
- Ensure you are dressed in the colors which mixes with forest so wearing khaki brown or olive green is great idea.
- Avail maximum details and guidance from field staff on duty or local guides.
- No gun or cameras are permitted inside.
- Be well prepared and know more about it to avail maximum advantage from your visit.
- Don’t be careless at any cost to avoid accidental forest fires for that maintain strict precautions while inside.
- Make sure you are not polluting the region in any form from air to soil or water especially by any damages to flora and fauna inside.
- Maintain reasonable distance from the animals as them being disturbed or incited for attack might harm you.
- Never, ever go nearby nests as alarmed birds might get their eggs damaged so are hatching cases.
- Littering is prohibited hence leave everything as they are.
