Haflong is a Dimasa word. It is also known as the hill town and is the only hill station at Assam. The average altitude of the town is 680 m above the sea level. It is famous for its scenic beauty and theemerald green rivers flowing all through the place adds to the natural beauty of the place. The cobalt blue hills make the view mesmerizing and the extensive orchids of Blue Vanda and other unique species found here are very attractive. There are many rare species of the birds found here. It is also famous for the plantation of pineapple, oranges and Peru. The rich flora of the place has more than two hundred thousand varieties of beautiful flowers. The Haflong Lake, Orchid Garden, Mailbong, Borail Range, Jatinga etc are some of the famous places to be visited in Haflong. The Haflong lake is the largest natural body of the whole Assam state.
The story of Haflong dated to the past when the place became the part of the Assam state. The city is located on the top of the hill and in Dimashi, the meaning of Haflong is “White Ants Hillock”. The british shifted their headquarters to Haflong in the year 1895. The initiation of the RNDM sisters, the oldest missionaries in the Dioceseoccurred in the year 1911. These sisters initiated a boarding school here. The British Engineers started attending the school. The infant school was discontinued because the place was affected by the malaria. After India gained independence in the year 1947, Haflong was included in the Assam state. It gained the status of a tourist spot soon because of its attracting orchards and panoramic spots. The place still has many remains of the British architecture.
How To Reach
By Air
Dimapur Airport, located at a distance of 266km in Nagaland is the nearest airport. It is connected to the major cities like Delhi, Kolkata etc.
By Rail
Lumding Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead, located at a distance of 60 km from Haflong Hill. It is connected to Guwahati via Lumdin by the North Frontier Railway.
By Bus
There are regular buses to Haflong from all the main regions like Golaghat, Dimapur, Newgong, Diphu, Jorhat and Guwahati.The Assam State Transport Corporation runs the buses. The journey by road is quite difficult for the people who are not habitual to it.
Places To Visit
Haflong Lake
It is comings a very big lake which is located in the heart of Haflong hills. It is a beautiful lake having many recreational facilities like boating. The jatinga village is located near the lake at a distance of 9 km from the lake. It is famous for the arrival of many migratory birds during the winter season.
Jatinga
Located on Silchar road, at a distance of 20km towards the south of Haflong, this place is famous for accommodating many migratory birds during the winter season. It is a mysterious place as during the months from August to November, many migrating birds coming here commit suicide.
Maibong
It is located at a distance of 72 km from the Haflong Hills and is the headquarter of the NorthCachar district. The Dimasa Kachari Kingdom, ruling the area from mid16th to mid18th century A.D. made Maibong its capital for many years.
Weather And Best Time To Visit
The hill station has warm summers and moderately cold winters. The good amount of rainfall is received during the monsoons. The summer months are from April to June and winters last from October to February. The maximum temperature during the winters is 30°C and minimum temperature is recorded to be 24°C. After the summer season the monsoons start. From the end of June the rainfall occurs till the month of September and stops with the onset of winters in October. Langugae And Culture
The culture of Haflong is Assamese and the Assam culture has a mix of various other cultures. The people belong to various social backgrounds like Monogoloid, Indo-Iranian,Aryan and Indo-Burmese. The native people of Assam are called Asomiya or Assamese. The language of the state is also Assamese. There are many tribes in the state which are very unique in context to the traditions and culture having an exotic life style. There are many different tribes like Kachari,Bodo, Karbi,Mishimi,Miri, Rabha, etc that exist in the state of Assam other than the native tribes.
Dimasa, naga, hindi, English, Zeme, Bengali and other tribal dialects are the languages which are spoken in Haflong hills.

Festivals And Activities
Hegangi Festival
This festival is celebrated by the people belonging to the Zeme tribe found at N.C. Hills. It is a year ending festival and is celebrated in the whole districts with great traditional zeal.
Ruolsafak Festival
This major festival is celebrated by Hrangkhol community, in the villages like Lungkhok,Muolpung, Zion and Rabi, in the Dima Hasao district. It is a community festival which is celebrated as a harvesting festival and aims to bid good bye to the year passed and welcome the coming year whole heartedly.
Nulding Kut Festival
It is celebrated by the people belonging to the Biate community of the district Dima Hasao. It is the festival of Renewal of Life. The arrangements of the festival are made by the Nulding Kut celebration committee. A programme is organized in the Fiangpui Play ground for the whole day. This is an important festival of the Biate tribe and dated back to many centuries.
