History
It was approximately two decades ago that many illegal stone excavations were in practice in this region whose beauty is best assessed through location of a tranquil and picturesque area on a lake’s bank here. Entire land area had almost been captured by the commercial groups until firm decision was taken to establish a park here. Both in-situ and ex-situ wild fauna conservation was considered as their importance came into limelight. The Wildlife (protection) Act, 1972 gave this precious piece of land legal status for conservation. The area was brought into the framework of a Protected Area under the guidance of a committee that consisted of the legal experts who extensively evaluated and discussed various modalities related to that under the country’s law. Finally the area comprising of 4.4521 km² was recommended in 1983 to be used to develop a National Park.
Total land area of 4.4521 km² consisted of specific proportion of government owned 3.8839 km² and remaining area was taken from the Prempura, Dharampuri and Amkheda villagers for this purpose. The villagers got Rs. 23.52 lakhs compensation for their contribution of 0.5692 km² land. Once total land was acquired and plan for the National Park set the entire area got encircled through proper stonewall besides fencing by the chain links for security purpose. Best possible attempts were made to protect it and thorough habitat improvement options were there in short period.
Shyamla Hill’s tainted hillock area as well as private lands from the nearby villages had already been acquired in 1980 but notification for establishing this National Park was finally held in 1983 only. The Central Zoo Authority initiated funding in 1993-94 besides granting this park a medium-sized zoo status that year. The area has become a true greenery retreat due to the efforts and dedication of skillful park management. This park has the new identity of Bhopal city’s green lung nowadays.
