Akshardham Temple, Delhi
World’s Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple – Akshardham Temple is situated on the banks on river Yamuna in Delhi, close to the proposed site for2010 Commonwealth games. It creatively conflates the traditional stone art and architecture, Indian culture and societal fiber, ancient values and sapience, and the best of modern media and technology.
Inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj – the spiritual head of the Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), about 3000 volunteers from BAPS helped 7000 artisans to construct this world famous Hindu Temple Complex.
The main monument, designed according to traditional Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra, is built in pink sandstone and white Italian marble. It is covered with intricately carved details of flora, fauna, dancers, musicians and deities. The monument consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, nine domes and 20,000 effigies and statues of Hindu sadhus, devotees, and acharyas. The whole monument rests on 148 scale-sized elephants.
The other alluring features of the complex are Sahajanand Pradarshan (Hall of Values), Nilkanth Kalyan Yatra (Theatre), Yagnapurush Kund (Musical Fountain), Bharat Upvan (Garden of India), Narayan Sarovar Lake (man-made lake) and a sunken garden shaped like a lotus.
Visitors are also beguiled by the Sanskruti Vihar, a ride in peacock shaped boats that let you travel through 10,000 years of Indian History in approximately 12 minutes.
