Neora Valley National Park


Neora Valley National Park is located in Darjeeling district at a particular placed named Kalimpong.  This place is a subdivision of Darjeeling district.  This park was established during 1966. The area covered by the park is approximately 88 Sqkm.   This area is wealthiest area in concern of biological resources not only in West Bengal but in entire region of Northeast.   This area is the independent region of Red panda with his perfect natural residence.  The area is encircled with tough unreachable hills and also having a beautiful greenery making this area as special region for wildlife lovers. In the forest of Neora greenery is too dense to enter thesunrays with a great difficulty.   Natural growth of jungles, very close touch of Bamboo trees, a roof of high peak trees, and twisting rivers with a white background of snowy mountain peaksprovides a scenic look to this area.

 This park has the most high place of approximately 10600 ft from MSL located at Rechela Danda.  This place share the border with neighboring states Sikkim and also Bhutan. For the entire Kalimpong Township, river Neora is the biggest source of water supply.  The mouth of the river is somewhere in the park valley and that can be viewed from Rechela Danda only.  A beautiful natural scenic spot in the valley is named Jaributi.  This place is famous for having a look of wildlife of this area.  The area is very famous for plenty of precious herbs and  plants which used in manufacturing of different important medicines.  This national park is not only a good visiting place but also the natural habitat of a lovely specie Red Panda.  This little and very pretty animal is just on edge of extinction in whole world.  Fluffy tail and good looking body of this animal is main attraction to see it.  N recent past, it has been seen that Royal Bengal Tiger is also habituating this park.
 In this valley, nature has poured its blessings in form of many cute and good looking animals.  Uneven height from MSL starting from 600ft to 10600ft provides many natural habitats of different bird species according to their living patterns.  So many varieties of birds like Cuckoos, Minivets, local Mynas, Owls, Sunbirds, Swifts and Woodpeckers are able to attract the visitors with their loving chirp and mesmerizing beauty display.  A special patch of beauty has been added by the nature in this park in form of very beautiful butterflies.  Two major races of butterflies namely Kaiser-l-Hind and Krishna Peacock are the most attractive butterflies found in entire valley.  This place is famous for its orchids grown up in a wild manner.  The mesmerizing beauty with feathering touch is sufficient enough to bind oneself to visit this place time and again.

History
The very lucky year was 1862, when the conception of this park thought for the very first time.  Government of India (under British Rule) asked services of Dr. D. Brandis to perform as Inspector general of Forest of the country.  He joined the job and as his first work, he surveyed the dense forestry area of West Bengal and later offered his proposal to make this valley as wildlife sanctuary.  Sooner his proposal was accepted and Neora Valley National Park came into existence.  Later, in independent India, the valley was given the status of National Park during 1986. 
The Divisional manager of Kalimpong town was the main administrator for all the well beings related to this park upto the year 1992.  Later the entire administration of the park re-assigned to the Wild Life Division of Darjeeling. From the year 1995, this park is under the close supervision and administrative jurisdiction of Wildlife Division-II located in Jalpaiguri.
Best Time To Visit
The period of more than 8 months is considered the best time to visit this place except in rainy season which falls from Jul to September.  Rests all the months are good time to visit this park. Summers make the mercury raised upto a level of 200 Celsius and winters, pull down the temperature upto 50 Celsius.  One should take along the appropriate clothing while visiting this place.  If desirous to visit in summers, very light woolen outfits are required but if in winter, heavy winter clothing are must.  Necessary medication is also required to be carried along.

How To Get There
By Air : This Park is well connected with various way of transportation.  Bagdogra airport is the nearest airport located at a distance of 3 hours journey from here.   This airport is one and only the air station that links the capital city as well as major cities of the country too.  Some of the international flights also takes landings at Paro(located in Bhutan) and Bangkok of Thailand.  From this airport only a bust route is available to the park.  No rail head is available even at a good distance too.   Though outside the airport, cabs and taxies are easily available for touring the park and nearby areas.
By Rail : Darjeeling is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 80- kilometers from this park. At the either side of the ark, Jalpaiguri railway station is also located at 95 kilometers distance.  Following trains are available to visit the valley:
  • New Jalpaiguri > Sevoke - by train + Sevoke > Kalimpong > Lava > Neora Valley National Park by road.
  • New Jalpaiguri > Sevoke > Chalsa - by train + Chalsa > Samsing > Neora Valley National Park by road.
Buses, cabs and taxies are frequently available from these railway stations to the valley.
By Road: This is the easiest and well available way of transportation to visit the valley.  The gateway of roadways in North Bengal is Siliguri.  Buses of North Bengal State Transport Corporation along with other private bus service operators, taxi and cab services are available to the valley from Siliguri. Both the other means of transport like Air and Rail are available from outside of Siliguri so the best route is by road.  The main route is:-
  • Siliguri > Sevoke - National Highway 31 & 27.
  • Sevoke > Durbindara - National Highway 31A.
The main guideline and map to reach at this valley is like – If you starting from Durbindra, you will have to go upto 12 kilometers From Durbindara reach Melli and turn to right for a further journey of 10 kilometers to reach this valley. 
 Kalimpong > Lava > Neora Valley National Park.
  • Siliguri > Sevoke - National Highway 31 & 27.
Sevoke  > Bagrakote > Oodlabari > New Mal Junction > Chalsa > National Highway 31 & 27. At Chalsa, head north 15 kilometres to Samsing.

Hill Stations Of The Park :  Tiffin Dara is one of the most famous scenic spot of the valley as sunset is very mesmerizing view from this point.  This place is famous among tourists. 
Adventure Places Of The Park:Visit Nature Treks: For various nature lovers and other zealous people, trekking has been a passion since long.  This valley has plenty of trekking options for visitors.  Treks of Panda, Butterfly, and Birds are famous treks for which the place is well familiar among tourists.

  • P.H.E. Bungalow > Alubari - 7 kms - 6 hours
  • Alubari > Jorepokhari - 5 kms - 4 hours
  • Jorepokhari > Ruka - 11 kms - 6 hours
  • Ruka > Tangta - 7 kms - 3hours
Visit Neora Jungle Camp :  This camp is located at a peak top of the green lusted hill encircled by forests.  The height of this place is approximate 6100 ft from MSL.  A village namely Kolakham where this camp is located.   This place is adjoining of the valley and at a short distance of 8 kilometers.
In the background of camp, the snowy and high mountains of Kunchunjungha ranges are spread.   The cap is able to give a feel of ease and peace as no connection with the other parts of world.  Small Basha type tentage can also be pitched here for camping purposes.  This place has also the dining space for camping parties.
Wild Life in Neora Valley National Park
Visit Of Red Panda Camp : This camp is situated at an average height of 8000ft from MSL and this is an enterance gateway to the valley.  This place is located at village Chaddapheri.  The construction of this camp was done by the Government of the state. 
Permits: This is a National park and thus official permission from the concerned authorities is must before entering the valley. 
Accommodation: State Government has arranged small cottages for tourists as well as some private parties also have likewise arrangements.   These cottages are easily available at Lava, Samsing and Suntalekhola places as these places are in close outskirts of the park.  
Weather
In the season of winter, generally mercury comes down to a level of 00 Celsius and in hot season it goes to 200 Celsius.  During the period of Nov-Feb, this place receives good snow fall.  Rainy season is very large and stays from May to mid of Oct.
