City Palace
The City Palace occupies one seventh of the total area of the walled city of Jaipur, the Pink City. Originally built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of the Kachhwaha clan of Rajputs, many additions by successive rulers were made. The Palace is a concoction of Mughal and Rajasthani style of architecture. The Complex comprises of various structures, gardens, courtyards, etc. There are many marvelous modest palaces and halls in the complex, such as the Maharani Palace, Chandra Mahal, and Badal Mahal. There is also a temple (Shri Govind Temple) and a museum (City Palace Museum) inside. Hawa Mahal also forms an integral part of the palace although it is not inside the complex.
Some of the other noteworthy structures inside the City Palace are Mubarak Mahal (houses the Maharaja Sawai Singh II Museum), Diwan-i-Khas (House of the Superiors), Diwan-i-Aam (House of the Common People), Chandra Niwas, Shukh Niwas (House for Resting) and Chhavni Niwas (House of Images). A multi-cuisine restaurant is also situated inside the palace complex.
The Chandra Mahal Palace houses the Royal family. However, the ground floor is open for public access. It has an extensive collection of art, carpets, enamelware, etc. Sukh Mahal hosts the dining and the drawing room. The Mubarak Mahal constructed by Sawai Madho Singh accommodates the Maharaja Man Singh II museum built in 1959 in order to preserve the cultural property of the royals. The museum has a rich collection of imperial costumes, Banaras silk saris, rare and invaluable Pashmina (Kashmiri) Shawls, Sanganeri prints and some traditional Rajasthani embroidery. Also on display is Rajput weaponry dating back to as far as the 15th century that includes pistols, jeweled swords, guns, etc.
The City Palace is a one in a million marvel that should not be missed.
